Critic’s Corner

McGowan Studios introduces “Critic’s Corner,” a new segment that follows students to recent performances around town!  For the Critic’s Corner debut, McGowan Studios’ own Rebecca “Mean Keys” Murphy spent a Sunday afternoon at Heinz Hall for the Pittsburgh Symphony’s opening season concert that featured works by Mendelssohn, Trifonov, and Tchaikovsky.  Here are Rebecca’s thoughts on what she saw and heard:

I, Becky  Murphy attended Heinz Hall on September 20, 2015. I went with my parents to see Daniil Trifonov perform with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Trifinov is a pianist from Russia.  He is 24 & when he plays, his hair went all over the place.  I liked Andante –Allegro ma non troppo (Piano Concerto in E-flat minor.

The symphony opened by playing The Star Spangled Banner, which was cool and we stood for that.  Next was Symphony No. 4 in A major, Opus 90, “Italian”, Allegro vivace which was nice.  This was written by Felix Mendelssohn who died young and his sister died young too (Mike told me).   We left a little early and missed Peter Tchaikovsky’s, Capriccio Italien, Opus 45.

Overall, it was okay.  I wore a dress and noticed I was younger than most.  We sat at the very very top and in the last row.  I could see trumpets and cellos, but not much else I was too far. I was looking for clarinets being played, because I just started playing that.  I did not like that we could not buy candy at intermission, because they didn’t sell any.  They told us to go at 7-Eleven across the street.
